FSO- theme books and Grandmas say it Saturday

Friday Shoot Out
theme
Books

Who says books have to be published, professionally bound, etc., to be enjoyed?

In 2009, the first year I was completely retired, I decided to write a book for each grandchild for Christmas.
I started about June of that year.
Each book had the child's first name in the title and throughout the book.
I had written in a style and using only first names called them a series so if possibily, I would have them published later, they would come out as
The Papaw and Mamaw Stories.
I even illustrated them.

Had Kinko's bind them with spirals.

You would have thought they had discovered gold.
There was laughing and reading out loud and the
parents were excited as the children.

It was a total surprise for them all.
HH and I spent the 1/2 year talking about and coming up with memories to make the stories pertinent to each child.
And they were all very whimsical.
Birds, genies, fish, horses, dreams all fun things to write about.

 The back cover.

We did that for two years and I have never seen children and parents so excited.
Each child has them tied together with ribbon and on display in their room.
They were all disappointed the third year, no book.

As they got older I did not intimately know as much about them as when they were younger and found myself unable to write for such a diverse age group.

I have been gathering ideas, as one is married and so many things have changed whimsical is hard to find for adults.
I could never have done that unless I had been a big reader.

One year I may just surprise them all again.

Books of my blog posts printed over the years.

I have them printed every six months.

what a wonderful thing to do. I hope you also have a copy, for later when you start to not remember as much you can go back and capture those children. This was grandchildren, could you do it with your memories of your children? I know as parents we didn't have the same time as we do with grandchilren to really enjoy them - but maybe one memory each?

Yes GingerV I have copies of all the stories I wrote. I was in negoations with a publishing company but did not feel up to dealing with all the work related to publishing. May still do it some day.

What a wonderful idea, I'm sure each grandchild will remember those books and will pass them to their future offsprings.

Wow you are so motivated! I never thought of having Staples do something...duh on my part! I am into publishing now, there are companies which do them for a really great price, so I am going that route on my second poetry/recipe book. You are inspiring as well...

What a sweet gift for your grandchildren. A true delight! :) Right now, two of my granddaughters and I are enjoying texting and sharing wallpaper photos we've added Bible verses and poems to. Short but definitely sweet as well. Isn't it fun to share our hearts with our grandkids - near and far :)

What a precious idea. No doubt they will be treasured forever.

Did you use Shutterfly for your books? Did you use cut and paste? That's my goal this year--get the blog in books. So afraid I'll lose the posts.

Books are such a wonderful gift and what better book than one created by you about them! This is so great. I've done a lot of photo books with Shutterfly to save memories but love your idea. Thanks for sharing!

I've done that with my grandchildren, too, Peggy and know how they love them. Yours look more professional than mine were but they loved them. One year I wrote each granchild a poem and put it in a little frame. I'm crap as a poet but they don't think so. 19 year old grandson took his framed poem with him when he went off to university! Aren't we lucky to have found such a great way to show our love to our grands?
