Sepia Saturday

Sepia Saturday

The prompt this week shows Doris Day and Bert Bacharack playing tennis in 1971.

My photo shows a family in the Jimtown area of Washington County, Kentucky
playing lawn croquet.
Circa 1920
Photo from Washington County Kentucky Bicentennial History
1792-1992

This was a well known and welcoming family in the area.
Birth dates in this family photo range from 1876 to 1899.
Croquet courses were popular all over the state of Ky. until just recently.
They were about as popular as horseshoes.
Sports of all kinds were encouraged all over the county around this time to help soothe the wounds of the WW I and other social biggies going on.
Our family still plays croquet occasionally under the shade of our huge oak trees.

go here for more fun stores about whatever.

I loved playing croquet as a kid. We kept our croquet set out all summer. Sometimes the neighbors came over to play too. Thanks for the reminder.

We used to have special areas in our city parks for people to play lawn bowling and croquet. I don't see that around here anymore. What has really taken off because of the East Indian cultural influence is cricket and more and more soccer! That's a precious family photo! Can't believe how they would play in pretty dresses and all!

We play croquet once every summer - but we never look as elegant as that family!

What a gorgeous photo. I love the fashion.
I have never tried croquet and I don't think any of my family did either.

You've inspired me to get a croquet set for the grandchildren. I'm sure they'll love it.

I've never seen a croquet game in progress. Does anyone out there know the rules?

We used to play once in awhile when we were kids. I had fun setting up the course with those little wire tunnels.

Your picture is wonderful. They got so dressed up and had on so many clothes to be outside in the hot sun!

That’s a lovely photo Peggy. I’ve only played croquet once at our Silver Wedding celebrations many years ago, but it was fun. Actually, now I come to think, I just watched all the guests playing :)

BTW Peggy, That’s Dinah Shore with Burt not Doris Day, though I’m sure neither lady would have minded being mistaken for the other.

I love how they're so dressed up. Even the natty hats on the men. Times and fashions have sure changed.

Here is how we played Bob. There are poles at opposite ends of the court. I do not know the official distance, we just put them according to who was playing. There are wickets set up midway to the right at about 45o angle. In the middle and from the middle to the other pole 45o angle. Then down the other side the same way. You play down the right side hit the opposite pole then continue down the left side. Once you make the complete course by passing through the wicket and hit the beginning pole you are called "poison" and if you go back up the court and hit another player you place the two balls together. Hit your ball and it will knock you opponent way outside the court. If knocked out the opponent is out. If still within the course limits may continue to work around and play. Some folks play once you are hit you are "out."

That brings back some sweet memories, though we never looked that attractive when playing croquet. I also enjoy playing Bocce.

I played croquet when I was young. I would probably enjoy playing it again.

Nice photo - I haven't played croquet since I was a kid, but it was so much fun. By the way, I like the new tag line for your blog and theme update - it looks good. :)

Thanks for posting the rules, Peggy.
When I've watched it, it seemed a free for all.

Croquet was a staple of our summers in the country, a lovely game with beautiful equipment. Something about handling the mallet and gently tapping the ball made me feel graceful, a nice thing to feel at 10 years old.

It looks a very elegant way to spend the afternoon from the photograph. There is a croquet club not too far from where I live who had a notice up last week encouraging people to call in and play.

I used to play croquet when I was young back in the 60's - I really enjoyed it. You just don't see that anymore.
