Shuffle off to Buffalo

Alan's prompt photo

This photo is of my mom, on the right, Margaret Edelen and her two friends Zenith and Mary Huston Rudd who were cousins of my dad John Rudd.

It was taken in 1935 right before she and my dad married.
They would dance every week-end at barn dances and it was said my mom and dad were the best on the floor.

I remember my mom telling me that
Shuffle Off to Buffalo was one of their favorite tunes to dance to.

I think they danced The Two Step.

S

Shuffle off to Buffalo
from
42nd Street

Now that we have had the rice and flowers
The knot is tied
I can visu'lize such happy hours
Close by your side
The honeymoon in store
Is one that you'll adore
I'm gonna take you for a ride

I'll go home and get my panties
You go home and get your scanties
And away we'll go
Mmm-mmm-mmm
Off we're gonna shuffle
Shuffle off to Buffalo

To Niag'ra in a sleeper
There's no honeymoon that's cheaper
And the train goes slow
Ooh-ooh-ooh
Off, we're gonna shuffle,
Shuffle off to Buffalo

Someday, the stork may pay a visit
And leave a little souvenir
Just a little cute "what is it"
But we'll discuss that later, Dear
For a little silver quarter
We can have the Pullman porter
Turn the lights down low
Ooh-ooh-ooh
Off we're gonna shuffle
Shuffle off to Buffalo

You'll go home and get your purses
I'll go get my niece and nurses
And away we'll go
Mmm-mmm-mmm
Off we're gonna shuffle,
Shuffle off to Buffalo

To Niag'ra in a sleeper
There's no honeymoon that's cheaper
And the train goes slow
Ooh-ooh-ooh
Off we're gonna shuffle
Shuffle off to Buffalo

Someday, the stork may pay a visit
And leave a little souvenir
Just a little cute "what is it"
But we'll discuss that later, Dear

For a little silver quarter
We can have the Pullman porter
Turn the lights down low
Ooh-ooh-ooh
Off we're gonna shuffle
Shuffle off to Buffalo

Matrimony is baloney
She'll be wanting alimony
In a year of so
Still they go and shuffle
Shuffle Off to Buffalo

When she knows as much as we know
She'll be on her way to Reno
While he still has dough
She'll give him the Shuffle
When they're back from Buffalo.

I have no photos of my mother and father together so I have to hold my memories of how they might have looked together in my heart.

Go here for Sepia Saturday with the whole group

I thank you for explaining the familiar saying "shuffle off to buffalo"
Your mother is a beauty and look like a cheerful, intelligent woman.

Thanks for sharing this part of your life

Now that I've read the lyrics, I will never think about the expression "shuffle off to Buffalo" quite the same. HA! Your parents must have been wonderful people -- best dancers always have a joyful spirit.

What naughty lyrics Peggy - panties and scanties indeed :) The lyrics made a wee bit more sense when viewed in the context of the film though. I”m sorry to hear that you have no photo of your parents together, but visualising how they might have been is a lovely answer to that.

Well, I love this post. Can just feel the fun these folks were having. Oh, and the words to the song, didn't know them all. Zenith !!! what an interesting and intriguing name!

That was so cute! The lyrics are very comical and a bit provocative, too. ☺

I'm sure that your imagination of your parents' dancing together is a delight. Perhaps even better than the real thing!

Shocking!

My parents loved to dance (it's how they met) and I do have treasured photos of them dancing.

This is delightful! The song expands on first comes love, then comes marriage then comes mama pushing the baby carriage.

What a sweet story about your parents. Enjoyed the video too - I've never heard of "Shuffle Off to Buffalo".

I don't think there's enough privacy on that train for them to get a little "what's it".
That was a great set. I loved it when the train opened up.
Enjoyed the story about your parents and the video.

Pity you have no pics because they must have been quite a sight if they went grand style.

How sad you have no pictures of your parents together. Sometimes we have to create our own memories and you have done just that!
