Sepia Saturday 108

Sepia Saturday and Alan has left us to choose our own theme.
Surprise
Pretty ladies
Feather and bows
Hat.

Ah ha I had a photo picked before I checked Alan's link and lo and behold it works.
I apologize if I have used this photo before but my grandmother was on my mind since I had been doing some genealogy today at the library.
Her hat is a Fedora according to Google, looks like with a tie on the front of it.
But at first glance it looks like RCMP hat.
Mine, on the left of my gm is a Tam or Tam-o-shanter, I think, worn in my own style.
Sort of topsy-turvy.
Whatever it is called, my gm made my coat and hat and probably the dress and undies I had on.
Out of feed sacks no doubt.
Why my sister has bare legs and arms I do not know, unless gm just wanted to show her off.
This photo was taken in 1940 on the front step at the end of the sidewalk at their home. You know out in front.

What a wonderful family photo, I love the hats. Will have to go and search for a picture of my grandma in a hat to share. Grace

I think you must have always been a 'darling' and your grandmother probably had a fun time in sewing for you. The photo is wonderful.

Yes Ima she was a professional seamstress and sewed for everyone in town probably. I was the first grandchild and the feed sacks and homemade was a necessity. Good old days.

As one who has just been wandering through family photos, I am completely charmed by this. Hope that it wasn't a cold day for you gals!

Oh yes, Fedoras, they're making a comeback at least around these parts for women....for those who wear hats...and it was so common for all clothes of any account to be handmade...charming photo..

The baby looks quite warm without a coat on. I always like photos of grandmothers and their grandkids.

you asked where to find my sepia saturday offering and I left a note on my old blog but here is where it is. And it's got my grandmother in a hat, but not me.

Your hat and coat look very much like a hat and coat my mother made for my Shirley Temple doll. In fact, you really look like you might burst forth with "On the Good Ship Lollypop."

A wonderful picture and wonderful memories. We don't have many pics of our family. Nice that you cherish them.

The thought of wearing feedsacks makes me itch!
The shadows say it was a sunny day with a low sun. You probably needed your Tam O'Shanter on a day like that.

It’s a charming photo Peggy, but when you enarge it you can see that your baby sister did have her arms covered. You can see the ends of her sleeves. But also, whose hand is that pointing upwards to Grandma’s fedora?

Sweet photo, I wonder what you are debpointing at?

Unknown said...

Nell I do see her arms are covered. That is me beside my gm and it looks as if I am pointing to her hat. It also looks as if I am laughing at it. HeHe.

Indeed a nice family picture, thank you for sharing. It looks like you were pointing at something when the picture was taken?

We've had such a good crop of hats this week - and the ones featured in your photograph are no exception.

You must treasure this photo. It is lovely. Tams were popular back then. So were the ladies' fedoras.

Thoroughly enjoyed your hats even though I am a bit behind this week. Your Tam O'Shanter is lovely. I never knew what those were called!
