John 8:46-59
"Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil? Jesus answered, ". . .If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God: yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you. . ."
When we hear this Gospel on Passion Sunday, it strikes me that there is an awful lot of name calling going on. It sounds like a childish school yard brawl. The leadership of the Jews have had an ongoing discussion (if you want to call it that) with Jesus, and Jesus is trying to assert who he is to them, and their response is to call him a name. They call him a Samaritan, a heretic. They say, "You must be crazy." That's really what it means when they say, "He has a devil."

We see the beginning of the passion and then next Sunday the triumphant journey into Jerusalem which begins the most sacred time in the church's liturgical calender.
Easter.
