Sepia Saturday #54

Sepia Saturday

When I began my research into my husband's family, I knew his father as an elderly man.
I had seen no pictures of him as a young man and very few at all.
I found this photograph in the WW I war records at the Nelson County Genealogy Roundtable.
It reads.
On the right
John C. Jones
Bardstown, Kentucky
April 1914
It says nothing about who the man on the left is.
\
We knew he had said he did not know his mother or father as he was orphaned at age 3.
This document states he was raised by someone else and also the date he entered.
April 1914 at age 28.
He was discharged in May 1919.
He served USA army of occupation Germany.

Go here for more Sepia Saturday.

It's wonderful the records that can be found so easily in this day and age. My uncle who died last month was married to my dad's sister and he traced the entire history of my dad's side of the family. I remember him telling me so many stories at one time. I think he even had books made up. Sadly I don't know who has them as I've lost contact with all my dad's side. wishing you a wonderful weekend. Tammy

Interesting history - sad though to have lost the distant past, wouldn't it have been nice to be able to trace the genealogy!!

Fascinating history uncovered. This is why I so love the genealocgical research; perhaps someday more will be revealed. Thanks for your holiday wishes...Merry Christmas

BTW several comments mentioned lost past, well after I found that picture and became a member of the Genealogy Roundtable at the library I found all of the Jones family history. There was another part of the family in another part of the state that by the graces of the genealogy fairies brought us together. They told me, "Those lost ancestors are crying out to be found." Just listen.

Great find! I found a photo of a previously unknown face of a distant uncle on a passport application! When you dig you can find valuable treasure.

isn't it a bit odd though that an individual has no pictures of himself but some can be found on records? an amazing find, and a great picture too!!

I'm sure it was very exciting to have found this at the library, and then to meet someone else working on this line. Congratulations!

I agree that our ancestors (at least most of them) want to be found. I sometimes think they help me find family members.

I sometimes think it strange that these windows we have into the lives of our ancestors are provided by such things as Army records and census records - such cold and efficient records that provide so much light when we trawl through the dark corners of our family history.

That must have been extremely exciting to find! Face to face with a moment in history.
