I wanted to be like Florence Nightengale

Soulful Life Friday.

A white cap with black stripes does not a nurse make.

Ran across my nurses caps today.
They had been washed, starched and ironed and hanging on a coat hanger.
A symbol of a dream come true for me.

That is what it is, a symbol.

I got to thinking how much and how hard I worked for the privilege to wear that cap.

I was an x-ray technician for 25 years and when new techniques using nuclear medicine came along I was going to have to go for additional training; so

because I wanted to go to college when I graduated from high school and couldn't I took the opportunity to be trained as a technician instead.
If I was going to have to go back to school I was going full force.

In 1976 I started one college course, English 101 and made an A. We had 6 children by then and I could only afford 1 class at a time.

It took me ten years to get through nursing but the day I got my pin and my cap was the happiest day of my life just behind get married to the greatest man and having my children.

Long before I retired from nursing, no one wore the cap any more and I hung my white crisp uniform, white shoes and my cap up and began to wear scrubs.

I thank my family and God everyday I was able to have that dream come true.

I will never forget that first day on the hospital floor.
A new nurse.
I loved every minute of it.
