Many years ago I was a massage therapist and studying holistic medicine. Along with a dear friend and fellow RN and therapist we held sessions at the wellness center and she and I wrote a program called Joyology.
This is one of the tools we used.
Joy
Joy is elusive, like the whisper of wind.
Just when you think you can reach out and grasp it, sadness grabs it by the tail and spins it back into the shadows.
Back and forth like playmates, teasing, running each leaving it's mark on my being, egged on by fear.
But hope fans joy to light again and again.
The magic of hope is so strong and joy so much the essence of God, that sadness will lose out in the end.
Through the practice of Joyology, seeing the hope and joy of God in everyday life, sadness and fear
will gradually spend less time in my heart.
I will wear joy as a cloak to warm me from the cold.
I will wear joy as a soft veil to cool my shoulders in the heat.
I will take joy as my comforter in the loneliness of night and joy as my knight in times of chaos.
I will see joy in birth and joy in death, each only one step away from God.
Happiness thy name is Joy.
P Jones 1995 Each participant was asked to fill in the blanks
with their own word.
with their own word.
Joy is------------------

At the end each person is give a copy of the entire poem and asked to fill in their definition of joy then the original is framed and hung in the meeting room.
