Journey beads for the Missions-Share the JOY

I worked for the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Kentucky since 1970's.

Have been an Associate of the sisters for over 10 years.

When I was younger I did many things to help the sisters carry out their missions.
Went to missionary sites, took part in sitting up and planning activities, volunteering for many of their causes.
I cannot do the things I once did.
But I do what I can.

Journey Beads
are made from a quarterly magazine published by the SCNs named
The Journey

These magazines are used to make paper beads then strung into lovely jewelry and sold to help finance the work of the sisters.

That is how I now help to carry on their work.
Making Journey Beads.

Cutting the strips from the magazine to be rolled into beads.

Rolling the beads

Trimmings used in the making of the jewelry.

 Brown and black

After the beads are made they are sprayed with shellac to retain their shape.
They are sturdy but not waterproof.

Using pinks and blues.

A complete set consists of necklace, bracelet and earrings.

There is always something that can be done to help others.
Lifting and digging and cleaning away debris in disaster areas is not my way of helping these days.
It once was.
The JOY of being able to help in less demanding roles is what I am experiencing these days.

Please go HERE for more JOY stories.

Sepia Saturday Groups in hats.

Sepia Saturday

Saturday May 19, 2012

Alan's prompt suggested photos with folks with hats on.
I think this is the cutest photo out of all that I had.

Found this photo in a history of
Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Kentucky
1924-1936

These hats on these little fellows are as cute as can be.

These boys were members of The Future Farmers of America and learned the value of hard work early in life.

St. Peter's Orphanage was founded in Memphis Tennessee in 1887.
At that time there were 9 sisters there to care for 135 children.

In the years 1852 through 1893 the sisters founded
6 orphanages in Kentucky, Mass, Tenn and Virginia.

Classes were held in these orphanages up to the 8th grade and the children were then allowed to choose the high  school of their choice while remaining at the orphanage as long as was needed.

Beautiful day for a picnic and Sepia Saturday

Everything is ready to go for today's picnic on the SCN Nazareth Campus.

Booths and stands stand ready to be filled with fun things to help raise money for all the ministries of the
Sister of Charity of Nazareth.
Village II all decorated and ready to welcome visitors to the campus.

Some of the Villagers enjoying the sunny weather.

Stop and say hello to Tom and Gracie.

Gotta go help get things started.

I thought I was going to have to bypass Sepia Saturday but as I was preparing my post about the picnic I am involved in at Nazareth, I came across this old photo of The Auditorium and Library building at the old Nazareth College.

This is the building show above that was converted to the Village II complex that is there today.

No changes outside but many inside.
I could not find the date of the erection of this building but it was added a few years after the initial building erected in 1817.

No building ever stands vacant very long on this campus.
SCN always respond to the needs of the community whatever they may be.
Once the college closed in the early 1970's immediate plans were underway to utilize these building for a retirement center.

As regulars to my blog know I am constantly using photos from this place and since I will be here most of the day it is perfect for SS.

Vintate Thingie Thursday and Tea Talk with Ruth

Ya it is Thursday again.

Vintage Thingie Thursay is a fun meme. Pop over and visit some and maybe you would like to join in.
Something old, older or very, very old and a little story to go with it.
Fun for us all and we get to know each other better.
As I have mentioned before on my blog nursing is my second career.

It was a big deal to graduate from nursing at age 48 with 6 children at home.
This was one of my cutest graduation gifts.

 Double click for detail.
It even has my name on the note pad.

My sister-in-law made this in ceramics class.

It makes me smile everytime I look at it.

Loyola University has a college in Belize where the SCNs work with helping to educate Belizians for lay ministry.

This is my cup that I got when I was in Belize City on a missionary trip.

Having..... Earl Gray strong since it is in the morning and I am working my crossword puzzle.
Need to be wide awake.

Thinking about.........Reflecting on how that trip to a third world county sure opened my eyes to the way another culture lives.
They are such a proud people and so full of respect for others and themselves. They are working very hard to bring their county back from the devastating loss of the Mahogany tree in 1975 in Hurricane Hattie. Logging those trees was their entire national economy.
Belize is a tiny county between Mexico and Guatemala on the Caribbean coast of Central America. After losing the logging industry the English began to build up the tourist trade beginning to uncover the Myan ruins and building resorts that cater to the rustic way of living along with the luxury resorts.
About the size of the state of Massachusetts, it is governed by Parliamentary Democracy having earned their independence in 1981.
About 50% of the population are Roman Catholic.

Feeling ...........I miss the folks I met there. Some of them get to come to the US to study due to the help of the Sisters and some even join the convent and study here and in Louisville. I occasionally see some of them when they come. I would love to go again.
