We have had a different experience in our lives in our family since Christmas.
As many of you who follow my blog know HH fainted x2 on Christmas Eve.
He refused to go to the emergency room and since we were at a family party there was a lot of commotion and drama.
He did agree to go to the MD the day after Christmas and the dx of Pernicious Anemia was established and he was referred to a hematologist.
It was very confusing to HH as he has never been sick in our 52 years of marriage.
When we walked into the Cancer Center where the oncologist/hematologist office is his eyes were bigger than saucers.
I had anticipated that and told him that did not mean he has cancer.
A lot of blood work was ordered and plans for a CAT scan of the lungs, upper and lower scopes of the digestive systems were ordered and a referral to a cardiologist was made.
Whoa!!!!!!!
Poor HH was overwhelmed. We discussed, argued and he told me to cancel all of that, he was not going through with it.
I was upset, disgusted and afraid and ready to just give up.
But when you love someone you don't do that.
I cancelled the cardiologist and the appointment with the surgeon and convinced him to have the lung scan.
I could see we would have to take this a little slower.
Being a nurse all those things just fell into place for me.
I never took into consideration how overwhelming it would be to HH.
Pernicious Anemia is very serious.
The patient is lacking the Intrinsic Factor in the gastrointestional tract.
There are several reasons for the loss of that factor.
The reason can only be found on endoscopy.
A tear in the lining of the intestine, ulcer, cancer.
HH's mom died of stomach cancer so that makes him high risk.
We will follow up with the hematologist in one week and I ask all my cyberspace friends for prayers that HH and our family will make the right decisions as we navigate this new experience to us.
Very few persons go through life without some type of illness or episode related to health.
We are both 75 and we know age has its wear and tear on us.
A time for everything.
We will continue in God's care.
