FSO-Bells.

Barry these bells are for you
From the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky.

One Friday Shoot Out I featured The Abbey of Gethsemani in Nelson County Kentucky.
I live about 13 miles from there.
Barry told me that he had an uncle who entered the Abbey many, many years ago but did not stay.
He was so appreciative of the story I did that week because his family had always wanted to go to the abbey but never made it.
Attended Easter Mass there.

The video is not mine but this photo is.

Sentimental me, about a tree, Share the JOY

About 12 years ago we planted a Riverbirch tree in our front yard.
Or rather the nursery did.
We accepted his recommendation of what was a reasonable distance from the house to plant the tree.
I loved that tree.

I admit we did not routinely have it trimmed as we should have.
It has grown to be gigantic.

Just a few weeks ago we had it trimmed by a professional.

I asked him why he left those little twigs on there.
He told me we need those to see if it will leaf out this spring.

Imagine my JOY when just a few days ago I see green.
I love the bark from this tree and use it to dry and use for some of my art projects.

Our plan was if it looks too ridiculous we could have it completely taken down at a later date.

I call our homeplace
Riverbirch Acre.

FSO-Museums in our town

There are 4 museums in my town of 11,ooo people.
Oscar Getz Museum of Whiskey History.
 (No photos allowed)

Old Bardstown Village And Civil War Museum
Woman's Civil War Museum

(no photos available.)

Heritage Hall at Nazareth Campus.

Over 200 years of memorabilia tracing the history of the
SCN.
During the Civil War all the schools owned and operated by the sisters where closed and students sent to their homes all over the country.
The sisters turned all of those schools into hospitals to treat the wounded soldiers, many of the sisters themselves dying during the Cholera epicemic.

North and South were all treated alike.
There is a letter to the sisters from President A. Lincoln thanking them for their service in the war.
To this day the campus of Nazareth Kentucky is a neutral zone in war terms.
I did not get a photo of it as it is kept in a "cold room" not accessible to the general public.

Typical country sunbonnet worn in Kentucky in 1812 when Sisters of Charity were founded.

Everyday bonnet worn by sisters up to about 1960 copied from style worn at founding.

Black veil worn over bonnet when out in public.

Spinning wheel from early years and they made their own cloth.

Very old wheelchair.

My favorite section is the area where lots of early medical equipment is on display.

Uniform and navy blue nurses cape worn by nursing students at St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing.

Nurses educated in hospital schools were called Diploma Nurses as apposed to degreed nurses, which is the norm now.
It took 3 years and they sat for the same State Board Exam that degree nurses do now.
They were not allowed to be married when studying nursing and lived in a community home.

The SCN community has missions in India, Nepal, Belize and Botswaina.

Some pieces of art

Botswaina

From Napal.

Some pieces I have made especially for me.

Batik from India from Sister Bridget.

Carved praying figure from Belize from Sr. Rita.

FSO- Weather Changes

I live in Central Kentucky and we are blessed with 4 definite seasons of the year.

We are in zone 6 for growing and planting guidelines.
Of course those seasons don't always manifest themselves the same every year.

Due to all the rain and finally the warmer weather
my maple trees look like this today.

Jonquils are everywhere.

Not a pretty sight but a definite sign of spring.
Spring cleaning and bulky pick-up in March.

All the creeks and rivers are flowing and filling up lakes for summer fishing.

Our summers are usually 80 to 90 degrees, very seldom reaching 100 degrees. Some days are humid if rain is due.
Flowers love it.

Thunder storms can blow up pretty fast in the summer
And are over just as quick.

I have geraniums everywhere in the summer.

Knockout Roses are everywhere in our town.

Outdoor activities during the summer months under the shade trees.

As a general rule fall is my favorite season of the year.

Mums will last a long time as the weather begins to cool down.
Nothing beats the cool nights for Friday Night football at any of our 4 high schools.

As late summer and fall moves in wind and sleet and thoughts of winter creep in.

Flowers die and thoughts of staying inside are on our minds.

 Light snows and or sleet

The weather calls for a hot cuppa
 Then it really hits.

and again

and again.

The wind plays with the trash cans.

Then the sun shine again.

This was the worst winter in the 15 years we have lived here.

Could not even get our front door open.
Thank goodness we had a garage.
Can't find the date for this.
Probably about 2010

 Last night April 10th 2014

This morning.
It is beautiful, even if a little wind blown.
