Sepia Saturday---elephants.

Our entire family went into Louisville to see the baby elephant Scotty.
I have photos somewhere but not being able to find them decided to use this video from You-Tube.

Baby elephant Scotty passes away after a brief illness

Recently diagnosed with colic after experiencing severe gastrointestinal and digestive issues, 3-year-old baby elephant Scotty has passed away.
Scotty was making steady progress while under close 24-hour observation and care, but this morning he took a turn for the worse. Colic in elephants is not uncommon and it can turn very serious, very quickly, which was the case with Scotty.
When all hope of recovery was gone, the Zoo’s staff then made the very difficult decision to humanely euthanize him around 8:30 p.m.
“This is a very sad day for us. We are heartbroken,” Louisville Zoo Director John Walczak said. “We did everything we could to see Scotty though this. We had the best animal care and medical staff available, but we just weren’t able to save him. Scotty was a special member of our family who had a tremendous impact on our staff, volunteers, visitors and the community. We are deeply mourning his loss.”
A recent ultrasound showed displacement and gas distention in Scotty’s large bowel. The cause is still unknown. While under 24-hour care from his keepers, the Louisville Zoo’s Veterinary team was also checking on Scotty throughout each day and administering medication. In addition, they were consulting with the leading elephant veterinary experts in the nation as well as a local equine expert. The Zoo’s Veterinary team worked to alleviate his abdominal discomfort through diet, exercise, fluid therapy and medication, but unfortunately Scotty’s condition deteriorated quickly.
“Scotty will always remain in our hearts,” Louisville Zoo Director John Walczak said. “He was a special elephant, and we will greatly miss him.”
Information about how to remember Scotty will be released soon.
A necropsy will be performed and results will be released at a later date.

Scotty was born March 18, 2007, at the Louisville Zoo to mom Mikki. He was the first elephant born in Kentucky and the Zoo’s 40-year history.

That’s so sad. Three years is nothing. Peggy, I don’t know if anyone else is seeing your blog the same as me but your font seem to have gone enormous and it’s had a strange effect on the formatting, for instance in your blogroll down the left handside. You may need to do some tweaking in your settings.

Colic is a terrible thing for those big animals. Thanks for the cute video to lift our spirits after the sad story about Scotty.

Sad story about Scotty. But with a name so similar I'm biased I guess.
The video is fun to watch and is educational. I'm now off to view the rest with it.

Ohhhh, that is a sad story. One that a nurse would be very intrigued by. Who knew that colic could be deadly? I didn't.

Poor Scotty.

I also didn't know that colic would kills elephants. My daughter had colic and didn't stop screaming so my first thought was to wonder about the noise that an elephant with colic would make!
I loved the addition of the video too. I have never thought of an elephant as 'cute" until I watched this video. It made me smile.

That is a sad story indeed and such a loss! Thanks for bringing it to our attention and sharing it with us.

I haven't been getting your blog in my reader lately - wondering what I've done wrong. It was good to catch up on your recent posts. Loved the fireworks and that you found the camera setting for that - I'm still looking, lol! What a great job you did on those shoes! Totally a new trend! You go Peggy!

Baby elephant videos may have more attraction and entertainment value than those with cats! Such a tragedy too for the keepers who had such a lovable charge.

Oh Peggy, this is so tragic. My heart just bleeds for this sweet baby and his mamma, all of those loving zoo keepers and the rest of us who have lost a piece of tender beauty in the world. How wonderful that you and your lovely family were able to visit him before he passed. Hugs to you sweetie. Mina

It is such a sad story. I do hope they find the reason and so prevent it happening again.
