Friday Shoot my town- Public art.

July 20th 2012
Theme
Public Art.

Fabric Tapestry
by
Penny Sisto

All sewn by hand.
She has done hundreds of these.

I have posted almost all of the public art in our town at one time or another.
Some of these photos were in my archives.

This piece is one I have known about for a long time but it took some time to find it.
I knew where it was but had been just too lazy to walk to see it.
My loss.
If it took me so long to find it, you may ask, how can I call it public.
Well because Penny was helped by the sisters on her life journey this was constructed specifically for them but it is on the official visitor's map at Nazareth.

I found it hanging in the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth Center.
Penny was once Artist in Residence.
The day I found it the center was in renovation and due to all the boxes stacked around and furniture displaced this is the best shot I could get.

I have a piece by this artist and cherish it dearly.
Her story is worth reading.

Stephen Foster and his flute looking towards
My Old Kentucky Home.

The hospital memorial garden.

The eagle was the mascot of St. Joseph Preparatory School once housed in this building.
A severe thunderstorm blew many of the trees down and an artist sculpted the eagle in the trunk of the downed tree.

In the Metal Garden of  RoseMark B&B.

I should have done a single post dedicated to Penny's work as I am in such admiration of her work and I knew her.

Go here for Friday Shoot My Town.

This was a great subject. Sometimes in the rush that is life we forget, ignore or just hurry past the art that is in our midst.

It must have taken her hours to complete that stunning piece of tapestry. Love it.

Thank you for the tribute to Penny. I love to hear about the stories behind art. I think my favorite is Stephen Foster - I keep turning my head to see what he is looking at. And the metal flower is so well done that it looks real at first. Great post. Glad I had time to look at it.

a hand made tapestry - lucky you for finding it. could have been featured on our 'handmade in your town' week. the carved tree is also unique. I saw one in Houston this last visit (drive by - no stop - no photo) that was also beautiful.
great post.

I'm always in awe of the amount of work that goes into making tapestries. The one you found for us is breathtaking! And I love Stephen Foster - what caught his attention, what is he looking at? Love it.

I like the variety of the works of art in your post. The tapestry is very impressive but I also love that wooden sculpture from what was left of the tree.
