Sepia Saturday---What I noticed on Alan's entry

Sepia Saturday Oct. 1 2011
#94

Well Alan's entry is a hodge podge of ideas and themes.
When I looked at his entry I noticed the date

April 15, 1937

1937 is my birth year so I was looking for something with my date of birth on it.

The New Yorker is an American magazine of reportage, commentary, criticism, essays, fiction, satire, cartoons and poetry published by Condé Nast. Starting as a weekly in 1925, the magazine is now published 47 times annually, with five of these issues covering two-week spans.
Although its reviews and events listings often focus on the cultural life of New York City, The New Yorker has a wide audience outside of New York. It is well known for its illustrated and often topical covers, its commentaries on popular culture and eccentric Americana; its attention to modern fiction by the inclusion of short stories and literary reviews; its rigorous fact checking and copyediting; its journalism on world politics and social issues; and its single-panel cartoons sprinkled throughout each issue.

Never knew of this magazine until our son left home to work for IBM in New York in 1980.
He lived in Kingston N.Y. for several years and one summer when we were visiting him we went to the city for a visit.
After that I became enchanted with this magazine.

Friday Shoot Out= Theme Stairs, steps, up or down

Didn't get to spend must time this week looking for stairs but here it is.

This is the side of our local Rural Electric Main Office in town.

I would sure hate to have to climb those stairs everyday.
Not very fancy but have had a lot of fun here.
Going up to one of my most fun things to do....

Art classes held at the Adult Learning Center in my town.
Coming down with a good feeling and a lot of self confidence and a new piece of art.

Now this is an exquisite stairway in the Motherhouse at Nazareth Kentucky.

At one time my office at the Nazareth Home Health Agency was in this building and I used to have to climb these stairs often.

Notice I said used to. When I go out there now, which is quite often, I use the elevators now which were not there then.

LOL
Thank goodness for progress.

Have not had much time or energy to be creative with all that has been going on.
Finally accumulated enough dark colored plarn to make myself a tote for fall.

Click on for greater detail

Love these colors.
Covered a ring and crocheted  a P for Peggy.

Beads where made out of paper.

The one I sent Sandie.

The first layer is a ripening leaf of Ky. tobacco.
Had no way to send a sample of Maker's Mark.
LoL

WooHoo

Just got my new diabetic shoes and I love them.
These are so cute and nothing like I had seen in years past.

They are made of a mesh material in the toe area allowing my sore toes to have room to accommodate for swelling, etc.

I can walk a lot better now.
Thank goodness for small favors.

Moasic Monday from just outside my house

Everyone has their favorite season and look forward to it.
I find myself always looking for the change of seasons which ever one it is.
That is what I like about living in the central US.
By the time we have adapted to the season it begins to get too hot or too cold or too something.
I really like fall.

Visit Mary and all the wonderful post for today's

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The name in Ordinary Time is misleading.
It is the time in the Catholic Liturgical Calender during the seasons of Lent, Easter and advent, Christmas.
There is never anything ordinary in the celebration of the liturgy of the Mass.

One of the readings from today's mass is particularly meaningful to me.

Reading 2 Phil 2:1-11

Brothers and sisters:
If there is any encouragement in Christ,
any solace in love,
any participation in the Spirit,
any compassion and mercy,
complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love,
united in heart, thinking one thing.
Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory;
rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves,
each looking out not for his own interests,
but also for those of others.

Have in you the same attitude
that is also in Christ Jesus,
Who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
something to be grasped.
Rather, he emptied himself,
taking the form of a slave,
coming in human likeness;
and found human in appearance,
he humbled himself,
becoming obedient to the point of death,
even death on a cross.
Because of this, God greatly exalted him
and bestowed on him the name
which is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bend,
of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that
Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

I love the image of bowing before my God in adoration.

Thy name Lord, in my heart, is Joy.

Sepia Saturday. Old school

Sepia Saturday
9/24/2011

The only theme connection I can come up with in my photo related to Alan's for this week, is the striking appearance of the outfits in this photo.
The gentleman in his appears to be well dressed.
Wish I could see his shoes.
Shoes fascinate me.

Old School

Graduation class at St. Dominic School
1938-1939

Third and fourth boys from the left on the back row are two of my mom's younger brothers.

This photo was taken in front of one of the church's doors and below is an actual photo of the school taken about 1940.

The dress of the students impresses me.
When I attended we wore white blouses and navy blue skirts.

This is the same elementary school that I graduated from.

When I figured the ages of the two boys it seems the 3rd, Charles Thomas Edelen, called C.T. was 19 and the 4th George Leonard Edelen Jr., called George, was 17.

George is still living today but suffering from alzheimer's.

I knew most of the folks in this photo but do not know if any of the others are still living.
My grandparents were farmers and I am sure the time in school did not run exactly like it does now.

Except for the fence, the school looks exactly the same today as then.

Although we lived in this same town for about six years and some of our children were born there, none of them attended this school as we moved to another part of the county in 1967.
They attended a parochial school in that area of the county.

Friday Shoot Out- theme Your choice b&w or sepia

Friday Shoot Out

For my entry today I choose two shots spotlighting my HH and my favorite spots in our landscape.

Click on to eliminate sidebar and show detail.
This photo represents all the elements of what he likes to do to relax.

Cold Beer
Binoculars
Bird identification book
Notice he prefers the single chair to the swing so that he has a complete view of our back yard and the surrounding farm land.

Click on to eliminate sidebar and enhance detail.
My spot by the fishpond under the shade of the oak trees.
Gardening hat
Harry Potter book
Fresh cut flowers.

Yes these photos were staged and the seats are empty.
I had these two photos enlarged and framed for each of our children a couple of years ago.
There is an engraved plaque on the frame saying
Dad and Mom's Favorite Place.

I purposely did not photograph us in them so that there would be no age attached to the image of our favorite things, for posterity.

One of my favorite farms to shoot.

First time I have done it in sepia.

Just the way of our journey

Spent the afternoon with my daughter and rode in our grandson's new truck.
Those grands are such joy.

Tea Talk with Ruth

Having......Tea from Aveda in my cardinal mug.

Feeling.......still fatigued but hopeful of regaining strength and resolving all the cardiac questions. It will take all month.Grateful I have all the resources to help with this.
Thinking about...

"There are times when we feel like life is going to sweep us off our feet.  No matter
how hard we try to stay ahead of things, problems, trouble, money or job issues
always seem to catch up to us.  Our faith that God does work in our lives and has
great things ahead for us is what keeps us from drowning in the every day sea of
 life."

Today's Word

"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.  Therefore we
will not fear, though the earth give way
and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam
and the mountains quake with their surging." (Psalm 46:1-3)

Today's Prayer

Lord, there are times when I feel that I lean on You so much that You might grow
weary of my burden.  Then Your Word comes to me reminding me that You are my rock
that I can rely on to hold fast to in turbulent times.  I thank you for being there
for me and never wavering. Amen.

that I receive daily through my e-mail.

On hold for a few days.

 A Kick in The Ass

Bless the energy of sun upon my face
The breath of life flowing into my lungs.
Bless the softness of a breeze on my toes.
Tells me I am truly alive.

Bless the flutter of hummer's wings in my ears
The spectrum of color that excites my soul.
Bless the eyes of my loved ones that soothe my heart.
2 days ago I had denied it all
Lost in the selfish pain of me.
I choose life to share with you be it easy or be it hard.

Just steps away from my inner shell.
A kick in the ass
A gentle hand on my shoulder to activate that step I need to take.
Chest pain.
I will deal with you.

Peggy Jones 9/17/2011

I will be away from the computer a few more days.
A stay in the hospital is exhausting although very sobering and I am feeling better.

Must let myself rest and be grateful for the care and expertise of a fine cardiologist.

Dear sisters and brothers women's heart disease is so insidious don't let it creep up on you. It does not present itself in the traditional ways male episodes do.
I did not have a heart attack on Thursday but must continue some more cardiac testing in the coming weeks.
2 days of monitors with sticky things all over you and arms left black and blue are a wake-up call.

Blessings to you all and I beseech you all for prayers for our family as we deal with this.

Love and gratitude to all our my faithful followers and to all those I follow.

Tea Talk with Ruth and What in the world came over me to be singing Karaoke

I am joining my wonderful family reunion with Ruth's Tea Talk.

This morning I am having my first cup of coffee in my regular pottery cup. Yes it is hot drink time here. The end of one season and the beginning of another.

Feeling so blessed and secure in my faith even though our country and world seems to be in chaos.
We will move ahead with the hand of God leading us.
Thinking about the beauty of the changing seasons and how God is always present in our every breathing moment.

The man who views the world at fifty the same as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life.  ~Muhammad Ali

Guest of honor
our 86 year old aunt.
This is her first time to be present.
She is the beautiful white haired lady in the middle next to this white haired lady.

On Saturday we had our annual family fish fry at my brother and SIL's home on the lake.

Games, Karaoke, great food and loved ones.

When I head this music on the karaoke I just had to express my feelings brought on my all the remembrances of 9/11 and the knowledge how grateful we should feel for our loved ones and our way of life.
Our sympathies and empathy was so evident all over this country and the world that I could not hold it any any longer.
Laugh with us.

Well I was singing "I Just Called to Say I Love You"
but was unable to upload the video.
I guess that tells me something, probably better not to do that.

Host Joe and Hostess Linda start the day off with a prayer.

Loading the water balloon cannon.

 Electric slide in the street.
There is a name for this street but luckily there are only two homes on this street and it is a dead end leading directly to the river.
The neighbors always join in for the fun.
Living on a cul-de-sac has it's advantages.

 Jello Shots?
First time I had ever heard of them.
Wow how naive I am.

 In University of Kentucky land,
In case you could not guess.

Retirement on the lake.

A glorious sunny day, not too hot.

All but three of our wonderful grandchildren were there.

A day to give thanks for sure.

Go here to visit with Ruth and other friends.
