Sepia Saturday #97

Alan's Sepia Saturday theme is children should do as they are told. LOL
What a great topic, at least that is my interpretation.

This photo is from The Nelson County Genealogist magazine that members receive quarterly from the
Nelson Country Genealogical Roundtable of which we are members.

Mabel, Cecil and Boyce Drake circa 1900.
The perfectly groomed and outfitted children are representative of the type of photo made of children of a wealthy family in our county around the turn of the century.
The expression on Mabel's face pretty much says
"I don't want to be here."
Probably grew up to be a rebel.
The beautiful boy, Boyce, appears very submissive and  baby Cecil is just hanging on.

They are beautiful children and their clothing is obviously that of an upper class family.
Indeed the Drake family are still prominent in that part of our county.
The chair is typical of those used in these types of photographs of the period.
I was unable to find who the photographer was.
The text under the photo says it is a studio photograph.

Nice take on the theme Peggy! I think I agree with you about what’s going through their heads as well. Poor Mabel - her mouth is so down-turned.

What a sweet photo - the little boy looks so patient!

This is a wonderful photo, but it makes me laugh. Even the baby looks a little wary about having to pose, lol.

Thanks for sharing it!

So seldom do you see happy smiling faces way back then in photos. Love this photo tho ... the clothes are excellent & they are just precious posing.

Have a beautiful weekend.

Mabel is really frowning, but Boyce isn't exactly smiling either.

They don't look too happy about having to be still- cute kids!

I wonder how many photographs the photographer took. If he took a dozen and this is the last, the children may have looked very different for the first photo.... It's a lovely image.

I have to agree Mabel did NOT want to be there. I bet she lived to regret that photo. :)

It makes you wonder what happened to these seemingly unhappy kids. Mabel is the unhappiest. Never seen such a frown. Beautiful outfits tho.

An intricate chair and a pair of trousers of a type I've not seen before with the buttons on the leg.
Mabel definitely has had enough.

Beautiful, beautiful photo. Mable reminds me a bit of Wednesday, from the original Addams Family TV show. She had that same droopy dog face. I have to wonder if they weren't a bit frightened, all dressed up and made to stand very still. Thanks for sharing!!

Nice photograph Peggy. I'd say from the clothing, portrait style, furniture and backdrops, that it was probably taken c.1905-1910, a period when cane furniture became more and more commonly used in studios in the US.

What a great photograph and what a great expression on Mabel's face. If ever an expression says "I might have to stand still but I am certainly not going to enjoy the experience", that is it.

Perhaps they took the admonishment not to smile a bit too seriously ....

the parents must have been pleased with the photograph nonetheless.
Boyce, I like that name. that is not something we hear around here nowadays. I wonder if he grew up submissive, or not...
