Sepia Saturday---What I noticed on Alan's entry

Sepia Saturday Oct. 1 2011
#94

Well Alan's entry is a hodge podge of ideas and themes.
When I looked at his entry I noticed the date

April 15, 1937

1937 is my birth year so I was looking for something with my date of birth on it.

The New Yorker is an American magazine of reportage, commentary, criticism, essays, fiction, satire, cartoons and poetry published by Condé Nast. Starting as a weekly in 1925, the magazine is now published 47 times annually, with five of these issues covering two-week spans.
Although its reviews and events listings often focus on the cultural life of New York City, The New Yorker has a wide audience outside of New York. It is well known for its illustrated and often topical covers, its commentaries on popular culture and eccentric Americana; its attention to modern fiction by the inclusion of short stories and literary reviews; its rigorous fact checking and copyediting; its journalism on world politics and social issues; and its single-panel cartoons sprinkled throughout each issue.

Never knew of this magazine until our son left home to work for IBM in New York in 1980.
He lived in Kingston N.Y. for several years and one summer when we were visiting him we went to the city for a visit.
After that I became enchanted with this magazine.

Yes we are into the older magazines. I grew up around the New Yorker, often we had school assignments from articles. I still pick it up at a news stand every now and then. I enjoy the essays. Nowadays with internet I think magazines may soon cease to be.

Fun to catch up on your last few posts! Hubby and I lived in NY - Brooklyn for a year and then moved back to Canada from there! One of our daughters was born there! Love the New Yorker and enjoy reading it when I get a chance! Great staircase post too! Have a great weekend Peggy!

The New Yorker has had some great covers and cartoons. (I haven't actually read it for a long time.)

I think the people in the background aren't too sure of the lady's cooking skills, although the little doggie is happily slurping up his food completely unawares of the vibes going on....

I've seen calendars made from cartoons from The New Yorker but never the magazine itself.
1937 was obviously a good year Peggy - I was born then as well.

Cute post. I haven't read too many New Yorker magazines, but I've read a lot of articles by E.B. White who wrote there for years. Cute cartoon. I'm sure that lady will whip up something great eventually.

A smashing post (do Americans use the word "smashing" to mean wonderful like we do? And to bring the thing right up to date there is an App on my iPad which allows me to download copies of the New Yorker (for a price).

When Borders was having its close-out sale, I bought the Complete Cartoons of the New Yorker. It's so much fun...and it comes with 2 CDs so you can search the collection and view on the computer. I highly recommend it.

The New Yorker is well known, even I had heard of the magazine before. Love the old cover (you should frame it and hang it in the kitchen).
