Sepia Saturday.#78

Well Sepia Saturday #78 finds Alan enjoying himself out in the big exciting world and me at home envying him his adventure.

I am not usually a themer so today is no different.
This was taken in 1956.

This is my dear late mom and my little brother.
Taken in 1956 my sister and I were 16 and 18 and always on the go working and trying to help out.
She was left a single mom at age 32 by my alcoholic father.
My little brother was the only man in her life.
She never married again as being Catholic she considered herself still 'married' to my father.
She was an attractive woman and many suitors but nothing could break her belief in the sanctify of marriage.
My brother was 10 years old here.
He promised he would never leave our mom, but most children do that and he entered the army about 8 years later and then returned home a couple of years later to marry and start a family.
The girl he married proved to be another daughter for my mom and the loved each other greatly. My dear SIL is still one of my most favorite people in the world.
They have 2 children but no grands so my children and grands serve as their's.

My mom was a strong and independent woman she could take care of herself.
She was a Medical Technician and worked for one of our local doctors.
Her birthday is coming up soon and I always feel her presence without even realizing she is there.
My heroine.

I received my June Blissfull ATC card from Sonya.
What a nice surprise to find in the mail.

The ATC card is in the center.
The card she sent it in was also made by her and look at all the extra goodies.
I love this swap.
The theme this month was weddings.
Thanks to Blissfull ATC Swaps by Wanda for the meme.
Go to Blissfull to find out about the fun.
Can't show mine until Sonya gets it.

What a sweet photo - the tenderness between mother and son is so obvious.
One of my aunts was left, like your mother. Her husband left her with eight children. She never remarried, but supported the family on a librarian assistant's salary and the benefits of living near the army base because my army uncle did not, at least, cut off her privileges. Those women were really something!

Love the photo and story of your mom.
Having been raised Catholic I remember the era where one did not marry again.
Lucky for her she has such good children!

I find it difficult to comment on posts like this, Peggy as I can't relate to the personal story involved. What devotion to your family's upbringing.

That's a sweet photo of your mom and brother. They really resemble each other. I love the vintage decor and the cat too.

Why does 1956 look so old n pictures?

That’s amazing dedication, and seemingly well-rewarded. How lovely that you can honour her in this way.

Your mother was indeed a very beautiful woman and that photo is so sweet and tender. Your mother was such a strong soul. Life for "single" women with children was not easy in those days.

I often feel the presence of my mother as well, particularly around special dates like her birthday, my birthday, holidays. We are lucky we have love worth remembering.

@anvilcloud, I was thinking how modern the photo looked. probably because i was 10 then too.

Beyond the loving family history, I have to say I love this photo for all the interesting textures/patterns all over the place. There in amongst all the visual noise sit these two people with the cat, perfectly framed by the drape.

Yes your brother looks like he has assumed the role of man of the house, quite proud looking. Your mom sounds like a survivor too, just making the very best of a bad situation. I like the stuffed couch and the photo....
