My life has taken on a new challenge

"Adding your diligence employ every effort in exercising your faith to develop virtue and in virtue knowledge."
2 Peter 1:5

After months of lab work and adjustments in diet yours truly was officially diagnosed with Diabetes Mellitus on Wednesday Feb. 2nd.

3 months ago my lab test showed an elevated cholesterol and blood sugar. BS not too terribly high.
I had one cup of coffee with 1 tsp. of sugar before I
went to the MD's office.
So we just brushed that off.
But my doctor agreed to give me 3 months to bring the cholesterol down with diet.
Oatmeal, Flax seed, whole wheat bread, lots of fiber and come back in 3 months.
I went back, fasting and had the testing done and went back home and waited to be called in.
The call came on Monday.
Since they called me in I just knew my cholesterol was still up and would probably have to go on meds.
Was I ever shocked when she said cholesterol was good.
Total down
LDL and HDL just in the right places, but
Glucose was at the point that it was time to do something.
What?
I had my education, was given my meter etc, and walked out feeling I could handle this.
I didn't stay feeling good about it long.
I tried to call HH and got no answer so my next call was to my dear brother.
I was a little shaken when he told me after 15 years he now had to go on Insulin for his DM.

I had tried so many time to lose weight and maintain a more healthy diet and just could not manage it.
I had brought this on myself.
I asked God's forgiveness and prayed for His help.
I am more afraid of diabetes than too much weight, which is ridiculous, such they are the same monster.
No sugar for 3 months and medication.
Well after all the reading info I was given I found out I could have natural sugars only, for three months ,and then revaluation.

The next thing was I had to tell our children they now would have to check yes for family history of diabetes.
15 years ago my only slim, athletic brother had a heart attack and was dx'd with diabetes.
We had never know of ANY family history of DM.
As the doctor said it has to start somewhere.

I know there are a lot of folks out there with diabetes and you think well so what. If that is the case please leave me a comment of encouragement.
I am about 75 pounds over weight so this is not really a surprise.
The surprise is how could I let myself come to this?
After 3 months I may find it is as natural as daylight, eating right, exercising, which I have not been good at doing for at least 20 years.
I am grateful that I found this out while I am still well enough to turn this around.
Pray for me sistas and brothers.

Peggy I have been a diabetic for several years as are all my siblings....although they only have to take tablets I have to take two needles every day. It is not that bad. I am not big into sugar or sweets (except I love chocolate) but the carbs which turn to sugar are my downfall. They make tons of good food for diabetics including chocolate, I have been able to keep my sugars between 4 and 7 quite easy. (I think the count is different in the US) That is normal for Canada. I am now 18 pounds overweight and it hasn't affected my diabetis at all. Sometimes it just is what it is and we have to learn to live with it. I know exercise will help and I am not really good at that with my arthritis but I do a lot of walking and riding my bike during the warmer months. Don't panic sweetie you can get your sugar normal within a few months, you will know what works and what doesn't, just check your sugars regularly. I check once a day every day at different times just to be sure. It is usually higher in the evening. E-mail me if you have any questions anytime......:-)Hugs

Nobody wants to hear such news, QMM. Just because it's common, doesn't mean it's something to be trifled with. You're upset because YOU know the ramifications of poorly controlled glucose levels. Just balance your fears with the knowledge that you hold the key to turning things around.

You can be successful at whatever you put your mind to accomplish, including conquering diabetes through diet, exercise and weight loss.

I wish you well, QMM.

Yes, of course I'll pray for you - every day in my car, because that's my best praying place, odd as it sounds. You will come through this. Don't be so hard on yourself - if this is genetic then it was going to show up some time. You will probably lose the weight you want due to the new diet, and that will be a side bonus. Thank God for the doctors, the science, the medication. You WILL be alright and you will come through this.
Sending big hugs....

Hi Peggy, I got the same diagnosis a couple of months ago. I have beat it again, (did so about 15yrs ago)..
I got the book Reversing the effects of Diabetis type 2 by Sandra Cabot. She is a medical doctor and treats again with diet. If you drink about a ltre and a half of water every day it cleanes the liver..all the best. I know the diagnosis is terrible. Much love Crystal

Just as I knew dear friends all of your comments are so wonderful and so help me. I know there are worst cases then mine and you carry on. Some one mentioned their AC1 number, which was news to me about the blood work. Mine is 7 right on the high line. I did good yesterday. Took my first two pills and obviously my food intake was okay, my fasting BS was down this AM. Thanks dear dear friends. Several of you were so helpful in sharing that you are also diabetic, no one goes around saying I'm diabetic, so thanks for sharing.

Hi Peggy, I know this must be so upsetting and unsettling to you and I can just feel the fear. I am sorry but I know you will find challenging ways to prepare your foods and with your common sense and ingenuity you will before you know it be an expert at all thing related. I pray for your acceptance, peace, and new life ahead. I truly believe you will have a handle on it very early on until it is "just a thing". I have a history of it in my family and have been diagnosed as "borderline", but think I am ok for now. I love you Peggy and also hope you're able to network with lots of blogging sisters and you can all share what works and what does not. It sure helps your soul to have a big circle of friends who are going through the same thing. Love you much, Mollye

I don't have much to say except to wish you all the best. I have a feeling that you'll have a better result in three months time. At least I hope so.

I recommend to all the Diabetes & Heart Healthy Cookbook. It is from the American Diabetes and American Heart Associations. I found it at the local library and then had to have a copy of my own. Take a look at it it's chock full of really good things to eat.

Dear QMM, I feel for you and have known so many people be diagnosed with diabetes as adults. It is definitely an adjustment but I am sure with your good outlook and faith, you will work through it, trial as it surely is. Here's wishing you the very very best.

Oh this is a definite challenge or it would be for me. I am praying for you to walk in health and that the Lord will keep you on the right path as you continually yield it all to Him. All the very best and never be afraid to talk about your journey. It's how we all learn. Blessings...

(Thank you for your sweet comments. I am well, thank you. Still plenty of sadness, of course, but I know that I will see my mother again and I know where she is. She has no more pain, no more struggles, no more anxiety, no more fear of the future, and every day is sweeter than the day before.)

Hi Peggy. My mom's side of the family had diabetes in it, so I try to be good with what I eat. It's not always easy, is it?

I will be praying that you can come to terms with this challenge in your life. The Lord never sends us anything we can't cope with. He will see you through.
