Magpie Tales #45
No one looks up at the expensive window high on the wall.
No sun is shining through the window.
No noisey children scurrying in the hall
as I sit with Joseph at the rickity desk,
I tell the story of Mary and Jesus and wonder if his autistic mind even understands what I say.
All these treasures at a distance for those who need the most, cannot be used for what they really need.
The cold useless stained glass window could do so much for this tiny school of special children.
There are other treasures in the building.
Old museum used now for teaching these children of a third world country who need so much.
"Joseph, do you know God?"
I asked, looking straight into his eyes, with my hand on his shoulder.
Joseph looks at me.
Stands up
Lifts his arms and his eyes to the stained glass window
and sings in a strong booming voice.
"Alleluia, Alleluia, Alle lu u ia"
Joseph can only count to 10 and doesn't even know his date of birth.
He is probably about 12, they tell me.
I take Joseph back to the main class room of 25 children all with varying degrees of autism and learning disabilities and one teacher.
I leave with tears in my eyes.
A true story I witnessed while in Belize.

How very touching. MaybeJoseph may know and understand more than he can fully express. There are so many with needs so great. May God bless them all.
What a deeply touching story! God has given each one a unique character, knowledge and understanding - and our perception is usually limited to our way of thinking. Other people have different ways of thinking and we need to listen and learn!
