Sepia Saturday # 44

Sepia Saturday with Alan

Last week I submitted a new found picture of my mother.
Here is another photo in that group of her.

I am not sure when this was taken. I was born in Nov of 1937 and since it looks like May with the May altar, I can guess 1938. I do know it is of my mom holding me.
The May altar was a tradition of Catholic families to set up a table with a statue of Mary and keep flowers on it during the month of May.
I guess there was a May celebration going on and the May altar had been moved outside.
I still to this day have  May altar.
My statue of Mary with fresh flowers on it each day is just a part of my life.
Mary is my model of wife and mother.

Such a tender moment, you with your mother. Thanks for explaining the May altar. This is new to me.

My father was a strong proponent of the Blessed Virgin and he said the rosary regularly (and encouraged us to do so too).
I remember that May altar well. I used to love the May procession and the hymn, "Oh Mary, we crown thee with blossoms". Do you know it?

I couldn't edit the last comment to include the thought that you are so fortunate to have these wonderful photos of your mom.

What a sweet photo. Your mum is so very young, but don't they all seem so young in those photos?

Growing up Protestant, I had no connection with Mary. I'd never heard of May Altars until this post.

What a sweet and tender photograph, and especially that it's with a May altar, a tradition you cherish so much. As others have said, your mom looks so young in the photo. How old was she when you were born?

Yes,the May Altar is unknown to me, But I can see how it relates to Mary & The Promise Of Summer.
You And Your Mum look lovely.

Nancy, my mom was 24 when I was born, and yes she looks very young. She had beautiful skin and was very small boned and dainty. She died at 74 and was still beautiful. Soft, unwrinkled skin.

may altars???...?????...
being raised catholic/pentecostal, but a true atheist, i have no such rituals nor did my parents.. my maternal grand'ma, yes, the one you see this week on my blog in the nurse uniform, was an ex-nun, and devoted her life to the virgin mary.
she remained devout her whole life, but never held it against me that i didn't share the same passion. not like my parents.
anyway, whatever the meaning of the whole set-up, it makes for a most lovely picture of you two.
:)~
so i learned something new today, and the day is till young!! (3:04 am)

Another lovely photo. And I love the way you seamlessly move from the image to the words, and together they paint such fine memories.

I am posting right now while sitting next to a table just like the one in the photo. The legs are the same anyway as mine has a four leaf clover shaped top, but it is the same era. Great photo. I too keep finding photos that I didn't know existed.

Your mother looks so fresh and lovely, especially framed by the flowers and you, the adorable baby. I hadn't heard about the May altar before, but I think it's a wonderful tradition.
